Book AC Services in Delhi

An AC moves heat from the room into the outside air, and Delhi makes that hard, with a normal daily maximum at Safdarjung of 39.9°C in May and 39.0°C in June. The outdoor unit pushes heat into very hot air for hours, so a fault that was hiding in March shows up as weak cooling in May.

Dust is the other half of it. Delhi's annual PM10 average was 221 µg/m³ in 2021 against a prescribed standard of 60, and summer dust storms from Rajasthan add to it. Once filters and coils are coated, the AC works harder for less cold air, and the US Department of Energy warns that this can make the compressor or fans fail early. That is why coil cleaning comes first in any AC service. Find the fault in order of cost, lowest first. Check that the remote is on cool mode and clean the filter as your manual shows. If cooling stays weak, the technician looks at coil dirt, gas pressure, the capacitor and outdoor fan, and only then the compressor. A smaller fault can look the same from the room.

Gas does not burn off with use. The US Department of Energy says an AC low on gas either was undercharged at installation or leaks. It adds that simply adding gas to a leaking system is no solution, so a refill with no leak check can mean paying for gas that escapes again.

The Gas refill & Check-up costs ₹2,800 and is listed at 2 hrs 30 mins. It starts with a pressure test for leaks in the copper line and joints. A joint is sealed if the leak is in the indoor unit pipe, moisture is vacuumed out, and gas is filled to the maker's pressure. Afterwards the vent temperature is recorded, you get the voltage, amperage and pressure readings, and the refill carries a 30-day warranty.

This refill works for R32 and R410A ACs, so read the gas type on the outdoor unit nameplate before you book, and ask first if it says R22. If the leak turns out to be somewhere other than the indoor pipe, such as the outdoor coil, ask for that repair to be priced in the written quote.

Three parts cause many AC outdoor unit faults. The capacitor gives the compressor and fan the push they need to start, and when it weakens you may hear a hum or click with no cooling, so test this small part before anyone talks about a new compressor.

The fan motor cools the condenser, and if the fan is stopped or slow while the compressor runs, heat builds up and the AC can shut down on a hot afternoon. A worn motor can also make itself known by noise, which is why rattling and buzzing are booked under Unwanted Noise / Smell at ₹499.

The compressor is the costliest part of an AC, and because its cost depends on the model, the price comes in the written quote after the readings. If the AC trips the MCB as soon as it starts, switch it off and stop resetting it until it has been checked. Inverter ACs now dominate the market. A 2023 government release put their share at 77%, up from under 1% in 2015. The compressor changes speed through an electronic board, so the PCB and its sensors can raise faults an older AC never would, and the display shows them as an error code.

A code is a pointer, not a verdict, and each brand has its own list, so note it down before you book. A power reset is the usual first step, and LG tells owners to switch off at the breaker, wait 5 minutes and restore power. If the code comes back, book a repair and do not keep resetting it.

The board may need a repair or a replacement, and the check-up decides which. Unsteady power is a common suspect for electronic boards, so ask for the voltage reading at the AC and compare it with the range in your manual. If your supply falls outside it, a stabiliser or a complaint to the power company should come before a new PCB.

Water falling from the indoor unit is usually a drain problem. Humid air leaves more water on the coil, and Delhi's wettest months are July and August, with 195.8 mm and 226.8 mm of rain on average at Safdarjung, so a blocked drain pipe or a filthy coil soon shows. Switch the AC off until it is seen.

Book the Water Leakage repair at ₹599 when the cause is unknown, or if water keeps coming after a clean. Not every fault needs a repair, though. The foam-jet AC service, also ₹599 and listed at 45 mins, washes the filter and coil, flushes the drain pan and pipe, cleans the condenser fins and includes gas pressure, current and vent temperature checks.

That makes an AC service the right first step when an AC has slowly lost cooling or smells musty and has not been cleaned this season. A split and a window AC can share a visit, at ₹1,098 for two ACs and ₹1,497 for three. For annual maintenance, the Annual Saver plan gives one AC two foam-jet services in 12 months for ₹1,098, a little less than booking both singly.

Start with the warranty card, because the answer may be free parts. Daikin India, for one, lists 10 years on the inverter compressor, 5 years on the PCB and 1 year on the whole AC for its inverter hi-wall splits. Gas charging and labour can still be billed, and terms change by model and purchase date, so read your own card.

Out of warranty, three things lean towards a new AC: a compressor quote on an old unit, a leak that returns after being fixed, and R22 gas. India's phase-out of HCFC gases such as R22 is due by 2030, so this gas is on its way out. A small fault such as a capacitor, a fan motor or a loose terminal is usually worth repairing on any AC that otherwise cools well.

Compare the written quote with what a new AC saves, not only what it costs. Star labels became mandatory for inverter ACs from 1 January 2018, and government data shows a big rise in split AC efficiency under the scheme. An older AC is likely to use more power than a new one with the same stars.
